Website publishers need practical accessibility checks alongside technical tools and documented standards.
A page can look finished while a keyboard user cannot reach its controls, a form error goes unnoticed or essential text becomes difficult to read when enlarged. Accessible Web Journal looks at these barriers through the tasks people are trying to complete. The publication combines practical inspection with attention to content and interaction design. Accessibility is treated as ongoing work across a website, rather than a visual style or a badge that can replace testing.
01
Walk through the task without a pointer
Begin at the top of a page and move through its interactive controls using a keyboard. Notice whether focus is visible, whether the order follows the task and whether a menu or dialogue can be entered and left sensibly. A control should communicate its purpose without relying entirely on its position or an unexplained symbol. Repeat the exercise with the important journeys on the site, such as finding a service or correcting a submission. Record the point where progress becomes difficult, not merely the component’s appearance.
02
Give content a usable structure
Headings should describe the material they introduce and form a sensible outline. Keep instructions close to the action they explain, use clear labels and avoid making colour the only way to convey a distinction. Enlarge the text and inspect the page at a narrow width to find clipped content or overlapping controls. Automated checks can identify some issues, but they do not replace reading the page or trying the task with assistive technology. Preserve meaningful names and relationships when a design is translated into markup.
03
Make form recovery part of the design
Explain which information is required before someone submits it. When validation fails, identify the affected field, describe the problem and help the person correct it without unnecessarily losing valid entries. Check how the feedback is announced as well as how it looks. This journal explores keyboard access, readable content and useful feedback through task-based examples. Its guidance supports deliberate improvement and further testing; a single checklist or successful tool scan should not be presented as complete accessibility certification.
